Sciatica Explained: Causes & Risk Factors

You have a right and left sciatic nerve, exiting the spinal cord in the lumbar spine. With sciatica, one of these nerves becomes compressed by something—often a disc, bony spur, narrowed joint space, or (much more rarely) a spinal tumor. The sciatic nerve can also be compressed in the buttock region by a muscle called the piriformis (in a condition known as piriformis syndrome).

The presence of another underlying spinal condition, such as a disc herniation, disc bulge, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis, can lead to sciatica. Sciatica can also occur due to acute trauma, such as a car accident, sports injury, or personal injury.  You may be more at risk for these conditions and the resultant sciatica due to factors such as:

  • Advancing age
  • Physically demanding job
  • Excessive sedentary behavior
  • Smoking and excessive sugar or alcohol consumption
  • A prior history of back pain

Common Symptoms of Sciatica

You may have sciatica if you have:

  • Pain in the buttocks and/or leg
  • Pain that feels sharp, burning, shooting, or searing
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg
  • Weakness in the leg

These symptoms may be mild or severe, occasional or constant. Certain movements may worsen your symptoms. Symptoms may also be worse first thing in the morning or after long bouts of sitting or standing.
