Sensory Deprivation Tank

Sensory Deprivation Tank Therapy

Battle Creek Family Chiropractic in Battle Creek, MI, offers chiropractor-supervised sensory deprivation tank therapy for chronic pain relief and injury recovery.

.

Restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST) uses a sensory deprivation tank like the one designed by John C. Lilly in 1954. This therapy method has you enter a soundproof tank filled with salt water that is heated to match your skin’s temperature. Then, the lid is closed to put you in the dark.

The Monkey Mind

When you practice mindfulness, you quickly realize that your mind is constantly chattering to itself in a non-stop, often negative fashion.  We call this the “monkey mind.” Along with constant internal chattering, you are exposed to huge amounts of external stimuli. Your attention span may be a mere second or two as your consciousness darts back and forth between all the things that distract it.

Cutting Off External Stimuli to Help Relax

REST uses an isolation tank (also called a floatation tank) to limit the amount of external stimuli you experience for up to an hour. As you float weightlessly in the silence and darkness, you can let go, let the mind rest completely, and fall into a deeply relaxed, trance-like state.

Chronic Pain Relief and Recovery

The chiropractic applications for REST include treating muscle tension and stress-related pain. Research studies show that REST is also effective in treating whiplash, other types of neck pain, tension headaches, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

How to Use a Sensory Deprivation Tank

If you never experienced REST before, you are probably curious about the procedure.

Before your REST session, you will want to have an initial consultation with our chiropractor, Dr. Justin D. Casey, for evaluation and to discuss your treatment plan.

Set up your appointment for a REST session by calling (269) 966-2006. Below is a list of what to do to prepare for your first REST session.

  • Come early if it’s your first REST visit.
  • Remove your clothes and jewelry.
  • Shower before getting into the tank.
  • Enter the tank.
  • Close the lid.
  • Relax and float upon the natural buoyancy of the salt water.
  • At the beginning, there will be ten minutes of music to help relaxation.
  • Floating time is one hour.
  • Music plays again for the last five minutes of your REST session.
  • Exit the tank after the music ends.
  • Shower again to remove the salt residue, towel off gently, and get dressed.
  • Sit in the waiting area to restart your waking consciousness properly before attempting to drive home.
